'Finding his groove' by BRUCE DENNILL

www.ianhenderson.com paint a picture of a man with the adventurous spirit of Ernest Hemingway, but without the violent impulses and the ego. “I’ve been drifting around, trying to find an angle.” This searching for a model that works becomes a thread of our conversation.

2009 was a big year for IAN HENDERSON. He released his second solo album, ‘Superglue’, recorded in Sweden, Norway and South Africa under the guidance of Swedish producer Ola Sonmark – the follow-up to 2003’s SAMA-nominated ‘Freefall’. He toured nationally, had two singles charting on national stations, and three music videos on rotation national and satellite TV stations. He led a highly successful two-month collaborative series of acoustic artists in Cape Town called ‘The Song’s the Thing’, and spent another two-months playing and writing in Buenos Aires. 'Strong bond' by BRUCE DENNILL

Ian Henderson dealt with the “difficult second album” issue by producing a masterwork in 2008’s Superglue, a world-class, soul-enriching collection. Does that make his next release – he plans to start recording in Stockholm in March – the “impossible third album”?

“It comes down to the writing,” says Henderson, packing his bags in preparation for a two-month spell in Argentina (“I’m going to play; work with a flamenco teacher; write; do some research”). “It’s also partly to do with the break I had after the first record (2003’s Freefall). I came back, and I’d changed a lot. I went right back to looking at melody, for instance.”

Ian Henderson turns Johannesburg's most famous underground music festival, JAWFEST, international with a performance from Buenos Aires tomorrow night, Saturday 24th October. Ian is in Argentina for a writing break prior to the recording of his as-yet-untitled third album in 2010, and will hook up to JAWFEST via skype video for a cameo performance.

Ian leaves today to spend the rest of the year writing, thinking, performing, mumbling spanish, dancing tango and drinking coffee in Buenos Aires. Chau!

Ian will be on Highveld with Zane Derbyshire tonight from 7.30pm on the Homebrew show, to talk about his tour, upcoming plans and to play a few live in-studio songs.

Ian will be performing a half hour of live acoustic music, featuring tunes from his new record Superglue, on UJFM tomorrow.

Ian will be in studio at East Coast Radio tomorrow from 2-3pm to co-present an hour with Damon Beard. He'll have a guitar with him, but judging from the last slot on ECR it's unlikely to be used for its true purpose!
